The Only Email Recovery That Knows Nothing About You | Onion Mail Tox Recovery

The only email recovery
that knows nothing about you

Every email provider that promises anonymity asks for your phone number or a recovery email the moment you lose your password. We built a different way — the only one in the industry.

⚠️ Every other provider

They promise anonymity — then ask for your phone number.

ProtonMail, Tuta, and every other "privacy" email service requires a phone number or a recovery email to reset your password. That single requirement breaks your anonymity completely. Your phone number ties your account to your real identity, permanently.

✓ Onion Mail

We recover your account through a decentralized P2P protocol.

Tox Recovery uses the Tox protocol — a peer-to-peer communication system with no central server. Your recovery ID exists only on your device. When you need it, our automated bot sends a secure token directly to your Tox client. No phone. No email. No identity.

Account recovery methods

Every recovery method — and what it reveals about you

Account recovery is where anonymity is broken. Here is what every common method requires you to hand over.

📱

Phone Number

The most common method. Ties your account to a real SIM card, registered to a real identity in most countries.

✗ Breaks anonymity
📧

Recovery Email

Requires a second email account. That account has its own identity chain — IP logs, registration data, potentially a phone number.

✗ Indirect exposure
🔑

Recovery Codes

Offline codes stored by the user. Secure in theory, but if you lose the codes you lose the account. No automated recovery possible.

Tox Recovery

A decentralized P2P identifier stored only on your device. No server, no registration, no identity. Our bot sends the recovery token directly to you.

✓ Fully anonymous
The technology

What is Tox — and why does it work for anonymous recovery?

Tox is an open-source, decentralized, peer-to-peer communication protocol. It was designed for secure, private messaging with no central authority. We chose it specifically because it has no identity requirement.

🌐

No central server

Tox has no company, no server farm, no account database. Your Tox ID is a cryptographic key generated locally on your device. It does not exist anywhere else.

🔐

No registration required

You do not sign up for Tox. You simply install a Tox client and your ID is generated automatically. No name, no email, no phone number — nothing.

🤖

Automated recovery bot

When you request account recovery, our automated Tox bot sends a secure one-time token directly to your Tox client. The entire process is machine-to-machine. No human ever sees your request.

📦

Open source clients available

Tox has multiple open-source clients available for every platform — desktop and mobile. tox.chat is the official directory.

How it works

The recovery process — step by step

From losing your password to back in your inbox. No phone call, no identity verification, no waiting for a human to review your case.

01

You lose access to your account

Forgotten password, device lost, or simply too long without logging in. It happens to everyone.

02

You go to restore.onionmail.org

Enter your Onion Mail address. Our system checks whether your account is active and whether a Tox ID is linked to it.

03

Our Tox bot sends you a recovery token

If your Tox ID is configured, our automated bot sends a secure one-time recovery token directly to your Tox client. No personal data exchanged.

04

You're back in your inbox

Use the token to reset your password and regain full access. The entire process requires zero personal information from you.

No Recovery Linked

No Tox ID linked. If you lose your password, you will not be able to recover your account.

The dashboard tells you before it's too late

Every time you open your inbox, the Security Dashboard checks whether Tox Recovery is configured on your account. If it isn't, you see the warning above — right there on the inbox screen, impossible to miss.

One click takes you directly to the Tox configuration page. It takes two minutes. Once it's set up, the widget turns green and you never see the warning again — because you're protected.

This is what makes Onion Mail different: we don't bury settings in menus. We surface the ones that matter, every single login, until you've acted on them.

Industry comparison
